Drill, Counterbore and Facing Indexable Cutter

Modifying Tool to Accept a Center Cutting Insert

A large car manufacturer introduced a new product line at their plant.  When they tooled up there machines and started running parts they notice one special cutter was not performing properly.  The engineer on the line noticed that the special cutter they had left a “NIB” or piece of steel on the bottom of the hole they were cutting.  As always, Carbide Tool Services, Inc. was up to the challenge to help figure out what was needed to make the tool perform its required duties.

Carbide Tool Services, Inc. found that the reason the cutter was not cutting the bottom of the hole was because the drilling insert didn’t properly cut to center line.  When contemplating what would work CTS came up with the idea to add a center cutting insert and a gullet for chip ejection.  What this did was give the cutter the ability to cut the “NIB” left on the bottom the hole.

There were a total of ten tools that needed to be modified and at the end of the project the car manufacturer left with huge cost savings.  CTS saved the customer 75% over new on this one modification.

Indexable Cutting Tool Modification

You Think It We Do It

A customer had multiple indexable cutting tools manufactured.  After using the cutters they found that the original design of the indexable cutting tool was not up to par.  Carbide Tool Services, Inc. and the customer redesigned the cutters to have an adjustable pocket on four drilling pockets.  This allowed them to have quick adjustability to cut multiple diameters needed for their application.  This eliminated the need to purchase multiple new special cutters for each application.
